Why Do TennisWOD?

Do you play tennis competitively? Have you ever suffered from a tennis related repetitive-stress injury? Do you want to run faster, hit more explosive serves and groundstrokes, and feel as good at the end of a match as you did at the begininng? Then TennisWOD is for you!

I am passionate about tennis. I love watching it, playing it, talking about it, and teaching it. I found CrossFit in 2008 and once I started doing it, began to realize how much it could revolutionize strength and conditioning for tennis.

The vast majority of tennis players are not strong. Most conditioning work remains tennis-specific (ie: running suicides, running longer distances for endurance, maybe some light agility work with a ladder or small hurdles or cones, etc.) If "strength training" is done at all it is usually done with bodyweight or light resistance isolation exercises. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE!

Better tennis players play more than average ones. Elite juniors can start to spend upwards of 3,4,5 hours on court by the age of 10. A racket doesn't weight much, but swing it tens of thousands of times in the course of a week and the stress begins to build. By the time a player is at the collegiate level it is likely that they have already had many different repetitive stress injuries including but not limited to: wrist, elbow, shoulder, abdominal, hip, knee, or ankle issues. Incorporating a strength program specifically designed to build muscle and condition the body for the stress of tennis will reduce or eliminate the frequency of tennis related injuries.

TennisWOD will make you more explosive on court. Many of the movements that are seen on TennisWOD focus on the hip and/or the shoulder (which also happen to be what playing tennis revolves around). If you watch professional players closely you will notice that on every groundstroke they load up and then violently extend their hips. There are many movements that specifically train hip explosiveness primarily the olympic lifts  - the clean and the snatch. You will see olympic lifts and their many variations on a regular basis on TennisWOD because they provide so much on-court benefit.

So what are you waiting for? Start following TennisWOD and let me know how much your game improves!
